Battle of the Bands featured on Singapore Polytechnic Website!

The final of the Battle of the Bands (BOTB) competition lived up to its name as nine bands went all out to impress, performing a cover and original piece.

The surprise of the night saw newly formed band, Sourplums, clinch first prize, winning $1,000 and a Gibson guitar. Its five members Nilesh (bassist), Haizul (drummer), Zamir (vocalist), Philo and Mike (guitarists) also took home The Most Popular Band prize. Pep Talk came in second while Will Submit on Monday wrapped up the top three spots.

“It feels great winning, after all our hard work and the time put into it. It was not a smooth journey as we had to find time to meet up and jam,” said Zamir, a final-year Diploma in Electrical and Electronic Engineering student. He added, “Support local music. People of different ages should come together and make music.”

A panel of judges, which included Patrick Chng from The Oddfellows, decided on the best acts based on criteria like overall performance and song-composing skill.

The event on 16 July was organised by Singapore Polytechnic’s (SP) Stage Management Club and the Department of Student Development.

Battle of the Bands Finals

After nearly 8 months of hard work; gallons of sweat streaking down us, its finally "Battle of the Bands 2010 Finals"!

We started off with our preparation day on Thursday, 15/07, where we transported all our equipments from Moberly to the auditorium during noon time, did the set-up with the guys from our sponsor,"Fourtones Music" and then the sound check with all the bands in the evening.

On the day itself of the finals, 17/07, we spent some time in the afternoon doing the final sound check for some bands. When it was about 1800hrs, we can see people staring to fill up the auditorium and everybody's getting excited over the show.

At about 1845hrs our Judges, Mr Gerald Lim of DMIT, Mr Caleb Lye of SB, Mr Prakash Xavier of SMA arrived and lastly our guest judge Mr Patrick Chng from "Gibson Guitar Singapore" and the band "The Oddfellows". Not long after, our VIP, Mr Liew Beng Keong, Director of DSD and Ms Hope Lee, Senior Manager of DSD arrived. The lights started to get dimmed, our emcees Dave and Shermaine opened the event heartily and that really got the audience high!

At about 1910hrs, the first band of the day "Scandal" kicked off the show with their awesome kick ass solos of shreds and sweep pickings, next it was "One Too Short" with their heavy rhythms that kind of made me headbang involuntarily.

The 3rd band was "Earthcoustics" with their light and melodic sounding acoustic music, 4th band "Pep Talk" with their matured and melodic sounding composure from their original piece "Mom And Daughter".

"Sunshine Babies" did a funky performance as the 5th band, the 6th band "Enoki" had tons of fun on stage, delivering a life and kicking performance.

The 7th band, "Will Submit On Monday" kicked off their set with the cover of "Maps" by "Yeah Yeah Yeahs" with a fantastic special arrangements of a dual vocals. Our 8th band "Sourplums" rocked the house down with their groovy rhythms and melodic sounding blues licks and lastly the ever mysterious band "Flying Market Uncle Macdonalds Geoffrey Saw Jimmy Page" did their performance with a lively start and a soothing ending.

After all the 9 bands performed, it was the break time were everybody went to set their votes for the "Most Popular Band Award" and had their light refreshments.

After that, our legendary judges had their guest performance, with Mr Caleb Lye on vocals and Guitar, Mr Gerald Lim on guitar, Mr Prakash Xavier on drums and our guest judge, Mr Patrick Chng as the stand-in bassist. They were so awesome that people were all cheering for them even when it was only their sound check.

After the guest performance by the judges, it was of course the moment that everyone were waiting for, the prize presentation ceremony. With the most votes acquired from the audience, the band "Sourplums" won the "Most Popular Band Award". The prize for that was a "Gibson Melody Maker" guitar.

The 2nd-runner-up, winning a prize of S$200 was the band "Will Submit on Monday". 1st-runner-up, winning a prize of S$250 was the band "Pep Talk" and finally the champion for "Battle of the Bands 2010", winning the grand prize of S$1000 was, the almighty "Sourplums".

Hence, this marked the end of the long 8 months' run for "Battle of the Bands 2010" and it was a sure success! I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors, "Fourtones Music" and "Gibson Singapore" for sponsoring and providing support in our event.

Workshop #2

We recently completed our second workshop and i am quite happy to say that the juniors are learning and coming along nicely.

We covered the basics of stage management again, and this time, we concentrated more on the process of setting up a stage. Going through every piece of equipment on stage, and teaching them how to set it up and also how to solve the potential problems that might arise on the stage.

I think that with a little bit more hands on practice from our lunch shows on Wednesday, our juniors would be ready to be efficient stage crew on the coming. :)

Workshop #1 Roundup

Just a simple roundup here,

Recently, as most of you would know, we had our introductory workshops to the world of stage management, where we introduced you to all of the equipment we use during performances and also, hopefully, we helped you gain a better understanding on what we do for our CCA.

I hope that this workshop has been a great learning experience for all of you new members to our club, and also, i hope you have learnt many things from this workshop. Most of all, i hope this workshop has created more interest in this field for you.

I can really see that some of you are really interested in this CCA, and also, its great to know people from all backgrounds are interested in this field, whether youre a drummer, a guitarist, or you had past experience in your secondary schools.

So finally, I'd really like to thank you all for coming down for this workshop and making it a successful event.

Of course, without the Seniors help, this workshop wouldnt have taken wings at all.. so thank you too :)

As to whether there will be further workshops, YES, of course there will be more workshops to come, as there is really soo much to learn in Stage Management :)

So do check your emails regarding more details on the next workshop's date and time.. :)

Oh oh, and theres gonna be a BBQ in the evening, so we can just chill out after a long day under the sun..

SP Guitarist Concert 2010

The Stage Crew have recently had a helping hand in the SP Guitarist's Annual Production "One Last Night with You".

With a skeleton crew of 5 we managed to laise with the SP Guitarist club and pull off this event smoothly. Im really proud to say that with such a small crew backstage, we still managed to do everything quickly and efficiently, not to mention, under all the stress and time constraints put on us and the rest of the backstage crew.

I'd like to congratulate everyone in the Club, for pulling this one off so smoothly. :)

Great job guys!

Introduction to Stage Management

Intro to Stage Management

This is a workshop organised and conducted by us to show you what's SP Stage Management all about. The details are as follows :

Date : 12th May 2010(Wednesday) or 14th May 2010(Friday)
Time : 1.30-3pm (Approximately 1 and a half hour)
Venue : Theater at Moberly
Dresscode : Comfortable clothes and covered shoes.

You need not come for both days but do note that places on Wednesday is limited. You may want to come at 12 on Wednesday to check out the Battle of the Bands auditions and see roughly how our club works. We will cover Introduction to Sound Mixers, Introduction to Recording Equipment, Musicial Instruments and Introduction to Lighting and Moberly Theater.

CCA Showcase Aftermath

Well, but first of all, I'd like to extend a warm welcome to our newest members. I hope you will enjoy your time with the club..

We are currently in the midst of processing all the new members who has signed on during the cca showcase. We are also finishing up the final planning on most of the activities planned for the future..

We are quite busy with the workshops planned for our new students also, as we want them to get familiar with our systems as soon as possible.. :)

Hellos peepur. A few things to clarify as some people (me included) is too lazy to read the whole wall of text below. So here's the important points.

Registration forms can be obtained from here (this site) or Department of Student Development. IT IS THE ONE NEAR ROCKCLIMBING AREA. You can SUBMIT your forms together with the photostated copy of your admin cards and $20 registration fee.

Very simple. DSD will even photostat your admin cards if you lazy like coconut tree.

ALL STAFF, STUDENTS AND 09/10 ALUMNI ARE ELIGIBLE!

Your band member can consist of 1 non SP member if its less than 5 people in your band, or 2 non sp member if there is 6 members in your band. Less than 1/3 geddit?

Another option is to visit our CCA booth and you will be able to see me (heh) and register on the spot. Remember, closing date is also the last day of CCA drive so do register ASAP.

ASAP means As soon as possible. Not smoke. :D

Competition fees and application form can be submitted to DSD during opening hours before registration’s closing dates.

Please print a copy of all members’ admin card and attach it to the application form

Rules and Information for Competing Bands

· The fee for this competition is S$20.00 per band and is not refundable.

· Each person is only allowed to compete for 1 band. Multiple appearance of a person in multiple bands will lead to disqualification of the bands.

· The following competition is open to all SP students, SP staff, and SP alumni who graduated at the year 2010.

- Bands can include non-sp students as long as it does not consist of more than 1/3 of the band (eg. a 5 member band can have 1 non-SP student, or a 6 member band can have 2 non-sp students)

· Please print a copy of all members’ admin card and attach it to the application form.

· Each band is only allowed to have a minimum of 3 members and a maximum of 6 members.

· Genres of music which involves intensive screaming and growling, such as, Death Metal and music with racist, sexually orientated, brutal, sadistic, masochistic, satanic, etc lyrical themes are strictly prohibited in this competition. Failure to comply will lead to disqualification of the band.

· Other than those, all genres of music are welcomed.

· Each respective band is expected to bring its own instruments and equipments, unless provided.

· Registration ends at 30-04-2010.

· Each band must appoint a band leader. All information regarding the competition will be conveyed to the leader.

· Cover songs are allowed during auditions.

· However, only originals are allowed during finals, and no cover songs allowed.

· Competition prizes are non-negotiable or exchangeable.
